Borrowing & Renewing

Borrowing and returning materials

Circulation staff charge items out to you by scanning the barcode on your Chicago Card and the barcode of the item you are borrowing. For most borrowers, materials are due on the Friday of the first week of the following quarter. Detailed information about due dates.

You may return regular-loan items to any University of Chicago library. Reserve items must be returned to the location from which they were borrowed. You may be responsible for overdue fines if reserve or recalled material is returned to the wrong location. Interlibrary Loan items may be returned to Regenstein, Crerar, and D'Angelo Law only.

Please note that regular loans may be recalled by another user at any time, regardless of borrower type or loan period. This policy applies year-round, holidays and interim periods not excepted. It applies to all Library users, including faculty with indefinite borrowing privileges. If recalled items are not returned on time, users are subject to late fees as well as the restriction of borrowing privileges. Click here for more information.

Return Receipts: You may request a single- or multiple-item return receipt from Circulation staff at any library. Please request a receipt at the beginning of your transaction.

Renewals

Most Library users - including all University of Chicago undergraduate students and staff - are allowed three remote renewals of regular-loan items before they must be physically brought back to the Library. Graduate students enrolled in Ph.D. programs are allowed unlimited remote renewals; graduate students in other programs have a three-renewal limit. Faculty and staff with academic appointments have indefinite borrowing privileges, and do not need to renew items.

Reserve and recalled items may not be renewed.

Why a renewal limit?

Our renewals policy is intended to encourage users to return items they are no longer actively using. Having more books on the library's shelves increases the ability of our users to browse the collection and find the materials they need right away, without having to recall them. Furthermore, a controlled physical environment aids in the preservation of our books. Finally, requiring periodical renewals reduces the number of books lost when our users leave the University.

To renew your items remotely, go to My Account, log in with your CNET ID and password or library barcode and PIN, and select Items Out. You may also request a renewal by completing our online contact form, or simply ask Circulation staff at any library

To renew Interlibrary Loan items, go to your online account or email interlibrary-loan@lib.uchicago.edu.

Library policy on the disclosure of borrower records

In accordance with Illinois law, the American Library Association's Code of Ethics, and Library policies, borrower records are treated as confidential information. Although Library staff sometimes need to consult the names of borrowers when conducting library operations, they will not disclose this information to others without the borrower's explicit permission, unless required to do so by law or by University policies.

Those who need material that has been checked out from the Library's collections are permitted to recall the material from its current borrower.

Policy approved by Library Board, February 21, 2008
