All Night Study Space and 24 Hour Access Are No Longer Available At Crerar Library

Due to budget limitations, the Crerar Library has decided to end the 24 Hour Access and All Night Study Space Programs.  As of June 22, 2009, Crerar Library's building hours will be:

Sun - Thurs.

8:00 am - 1:00 am

Friday and Saturday

8:00 am - 10:00 pm

At closing time, all patrons are required to leave the building.

Please note that the building hours on Sunday have actually increased, as we now open at 8:00 am instead of noon.

Why are you doing this?  I used the library late at night all the time!

Closing the All Night Study Space and eliminating 24 Hour Access was not an easy decision.  24 Hour Access has been a longstanding tradition at Crerar, and was originally designed as a way for certain members of the University and Hospital community to access reference and other material overnight.  Now most of that information can now be found using our electronic resources, and thus use of the program for its intended purpose had diminished a great deal.  The All Night Study Space is newer to Crerar, and was established when the Regenstein A-Level was closed for an extended period of time.  The All Night Study Space at Crerar was convenient for many students but is not unique on campus, and faced with the prospect of cutting other valuable services, the decision was made to close the Crerar Library to all patrons overnight.

Where can I go now?

During the academic school year, users with a valid Chicago Card can use the All Night Study Space at Regenstein Library or the Harper Memorial Library College Learning Center.

How will I know when to leave?  What are the closing procedures?

Approximately 30 minutes before the close of the library, the first bell will ring.  The bell will ring again 15 minutes before close.  At this point, you should gather your belongings and start heading towards the exit.  After that, a U of C Police officer will sweep the building and ask everyone to leave for the night.  At close, the entry attendant will shut off the lights.  All patrons must leave the building at this time.

The entry attendant will lock the front doors 15 minutes before the close of the building, and no one will be allowed entry after this time.  Please make sure you take all of your belongings when you leave.

What if I forgot something in the building?

After the building closes, there will not be anyone around to let you into the building.  If you left something and are concerned about it, email jclcircservices@lib.uchicago.edu with a description of the item and its approximate location.  Someone will try and find it first thing in the morning, and hold it for you at the circulation desk.

Will the USITE/Crerar or the CyberCafe area stay open?

No.  As both of those are inside the library, they will be inaccessible when the building is closed.

Is there any service that can take me home late at night, or maybe to a different campus location?

Buses run until 2 a.m. Sunday - Wednesday and until 3 a.m. Thursday - Saturday. An on-demand van service, the University's SafeRide program, runs from 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. Sunday - Wednesday, and 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday - Saturday and is available to students, faculty, and staff located between 39th and 64th streets and Cottage Grove and Lake Shore Drive. The van operates on a "first call, first come" basis. Call 702-2022 to request service. Umbrella coverage is available at anytime (including after the late night van service has stopped and before daybreak). By calling University Police at 702-8181, the first available patrol car will be dispatched to accompany you as you walk to your destination.

What about cleaning staff?  Will they still be working after the building closes?

Custodial staff will now be cleaning during the operating hours of the library.  We apologize for any disturbance this causes, but please be courteous if they need to clean in the area around you.

If I really, truly promise not to steal anything, can I stay overnight?

No, sorry.

To whom can I address my questions and/or concerns about these programs?

You can contact Crerar Access Services at jclcircservices@lib.uchicago.edu or by phone at (773) 702-7409.
