At the conclusion of an immensely successful first concert season in London, and on the recommendation of the music historian, Charles Burney (1726-1814), Haydn was bestowed with an honorary Doctorate of Music from Oxford University in July 1791. The festive ceremony lasted three days and was held at the Sheldonian Theatre at Oxford.

The documentary exhibition "Haydn on Tour" celebrates the 200 year observance of Joseph Haydn's death (1732-1809). Traveling from the Haydn Festspiele in Eisenstadt, Austria, the aim of the exhibit is to intensify the awareness of the composer in Europe and the United States. The exhibition includes a biographical account, as well as information on the places where Haydn lived and worked. Main historical events of the composer's times are chronologically presented to enable the exhibition visitor to form a general musical and artistic impression of the era.

This sketch represents a view of the town of Eisenstadt, the official residence of the Esterházy Princes, whose palace can be seen prominently on the left.  Located in Burgenland, eastern Austria, this is where Haydn, in 1761, began his long employment by the wealthy and powerful Hungarian family.
