How do I recall a book currently checked out by another user?
Return to How Do I...?

If the title you need is checked out to another user, you can request that the item be recalled for your use. The best way to do this is by clicking on the "recall item" link in the catalog record next to the particular volume you need.

Recalling a Book

Once you have selected "Recall Item" you will be taken to a form where you must enter your barcode and PIN.

  • Barcode: The small number under the barcode on your Chicago Card.
  • PIN: If you are a student, this is your student number. If you are a faculty member or staff member, you will need to contact the library to obtain a PIN.

Recalls usually take from 10 to 14 calendar days, depending on when the borrower who has the book returns it. Library staff will notify you when the item is returned and will hold it for you at the circulation counter.
