II. CHECKLIST FOR UNIVERSITY-WIDE REQUIREMENTS
The Dissertation Office will reject any dissertation which does not meet the following University-wide minimum standards.
- There are two identical, complete unbound copies of the manuscript, each on one (and only one) of the approved papers, boxed separately and appropriately. No other paper is acceptable. (Section IV.1)
- Two copies of a separate abstract of no more than 350 words, paginated separately from the primary manuscript and accompanied by two copies of the title page, are included. The student's name, the title of the dissertation and the advisor's name and title appear at the top of the first page of the abstract, which is numbered Arabic page 1. (See Sample Abstract)
- The final two copies, two separate abstracts and two additional title pages are accompanied by the completed forms, as required by the University. (Section III)
- No one volume has more than 300 sheets of paper. (Section IV.3)
- All tables, figures, text and page numbers print within the prescribed margins. (Section V.1)
- All type is dark, crisp and large enough for microfilming. (Section V.4)
- The dissertation is double spaced, printed on one side of the paper. (Section V.3.2.3)
- All pages are paginated consecutively, and no page is missing. The first text page of volume one is Arabic number 1. Arabic page numbers are consecutive from volume to volume. Preliminary pages of each volume are in lower case Roman numerals, with the title page of each volume counting as "i" but not printing. Each page has a page number on it with the exceptions of the title, copyright, dedication, part-opening, and epigraph pages. (Sections V.2, V.2.1 and V.3.2.7)
- The layout and style of the title page follow exactly the model provided by the Dissertation Office. (See Sample Title Page)
- Chapter titles, subheadings, footnotes, and bibliography or references are appropriately and consistently formatted. (Sections V.3.2.1-2, V.3.2.4 and V.3.3.2)
- If there are tables and/or figures in the dissertation, the Table of Contents precedes a List of Tables and/or a List of Figures with page references. Each table and/or figure has a unique number and caption assigned to it. (Sections V.3.2.5-8)
- Separate caption and legend pages are turned toward the figure or table. The binding edge is then the right edge, with the margin one and a half inches. (Sections V.3.2.6)
- All photographs and figures are mounted using approved materials and methods. (Section IV.2.3)
- Any digital media submitted is included with both manuscripts. All digital media in compound documents complies with the specifications set by ProQuest Information and Learning/UMI and the student's department. (Section VII.4)
